Named after conquistador Pedro Lujan who was killed by the Indians in a 1536 uprise, the cathedral city lies amidst the northern end of the Pampas. A popular tourist attraction is the Basilica de Nuestra Seniora de Lujan. Every year in October it attracts more than a million pilgrims who walk the walk from Buenos Aires (about 70km). The local zoo also offers a great day out for animal and nature lovers, featuring tigers, antelopes, flamingos, pumas, lions and many more.
